National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Inam Haider Malik said on Thursday that monsoon would continue for another two to three days, 24NewsHD TV reported.
Giving an update on the prevailing weather conditions and the catastrophic floods, Malik said that water flow was high at Head Panjnad and Guddu Barrage. He said that flood had destroyed crops and swept away livestock in several areas of the country, but now the situation was under control in the areas of Sutlej, Ravi and Chenab.
He said that rescue operations were underway across the country and 2.4 million people were shifted to safer places in Punjab. He said that 1.5 million people were shifted to safer places in Sindh. He expressed his gratitude to welfare organizations involved in flood relief activities. He said that all institutions were working for future advance arrangements.
Malik said that embankments were breached in some areas to ease pressure on the rivers. He said the Punjab government had provided 9,000 tents and ration bags to the flood hit people. More than 9,000 tons of ration was sent to the flood hit people of Punjab, he said.
He said that more rain was expected in central Punjab and Azad Kashmir from September 16 to 18. He said, “We will have to take joint steps to deal with climate challenge. Glaciers are melting rapidly due to rising temperatures.”
