Pakistani director, writer and actor Yasir Hussain has challenged conventional ideas of masculinity, making it clear that he has absolutely no issue if people recognise him through the name and success of his wife, actress Iqra Aziz.
A viral video from a podcast has been making the rounds on social media, in which Yasir candidly discussed his identity, his wife’s achievements and the societal expectations surrounding masculinity.
“If people know me because of Iqra, I have absolutely no problem with it,” Yasir said. He explained that his confidence in himself allows him to embrace the idea without feeling threatened.
“I have a lot of confidence in myself, and secondly, why can’t someone be known by their wife’s name if she is doing such great work? Why not?” he questioned.
Yasir went on to challenge the way masculinity is traditionally perceived in society, arguing that strength should not be measured through outdated notions of male dominance.
“We have looked at masculinity from a very different perspective. In our society, we have created this idea that being weak means one thing and being strong means another, whereas that is not necessarily the case,” he remarked.
According to Yasir, being a man has no connection with whether a person is recognised through his own name or that of his wife. He stressed that a woman’s success should not make a man feel diminished.
He also referred to a recent statement by another actor, who had expressed discomfort with his wife performing certain scenes with another man. Yasir said he respected the actor’s personal opinion, particularly because he is also a director and has the right to hold his own views.
However, he criticised the way social media users subsequently dragged another celebrity couple, Hira and Mani, into the discussion, calling it an inappropriate comparison.
Yasir further pointed out how social media discussions can sometimes create unnecessary confusion, with people turning ordinary statements into exaggerated narratives and immediately labelling someone as an exceptionally “great man” simply for expressing a particular opinion.
Reflecting on his own perspective, Yasir admitted that this mindset may not always have been part of him but became much clearer after marrying Iqra.
“After meeting Iqra, I strongly realised that this is actually a very good thing. It should be this way whoever works harder and has a bigger name should receive their due credit,” he explained.
Yasir also clarified that Iqra’s surname on her official identity documents remains Aziz, stressing that she independently chose to use “Hussain” on Instagram.
“Look at Iqra’s ID card her name is still Iqra Aziz. On Instagram, she has written Hussain herself. I never asked her to do it; it was completely her own choice,” he added.
Yasir’s candid remarks have once again sparked conversation around marriage, individual identity and the changing perception of masculinity, with the director openly embracing his wife’s success rather than viewing it as a threat to his own identity.
