Karachi police have arrested the main accused in the assault of Karachi University senior professor Arif Khan Saqi and sealed the hotel where the professor was attacked, the 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Friday.

The judicial magistrate handed over the accused, Qunain Shah, to the police on a three-day physical remand and sought a progress report for the next hearing.

According to the report, Karachi Police detained Konain Shah, who is accused of assaulting and unlawfully detaining Professor Saqi. The incident took place at a hotel where the accused was accompanied by his security guards.

On the instructions of senior authorities, Karachi police sealed the hotel and deployed personnel there. The accused was taken to Sachal police station for further investigation.

Police said they have so far arrested five suspects, including two gunmen, in connection with the case. A case has been registered against the accused at Sachal police station.

The development came a day after the 24NewsHD TV channel reported that the District and Sessions Court had granted interim bail to Konain Shah, the main accused in the alleged assault on the Karachi University professor.

The court ordered Shah to submit a bond of Rs20,000 and directed him to join the investigation. It also summoned the investigating officer and adjourned further proceedings until September 21.

According to police, Professor Saqi was subjected to violence and unlawfully detained by the accused. The investigation into the case is continuing.
