The Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill, 2023 was also challenged in the Lahore High Court on Wednesday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
A petition was filed by a citizen Mashkoor Hussain challenging the Section 4 of the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill.
The petitioner made federal government and President of Pakistan respondents through principal secretary.
The joint session of parliament on Monday adopted the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill with some amendments, seeking to curtail powers of the chief justice of Pakistan.
Earlier, the bill was passed by both houses but President Arif Alvi refused to sign it and sent it back to the parliament for reconsideration.
As per the Constitution, the bill will be sent to the president once again for his assent, and if he does not sign it within ten days, the bill will automatically become an act.
On Tuesday, two petitions were filed by lawyers challenging the piece of legislation in the Supreme Court and the Islamabad High Court.
The petition in the Supreme Court was filed by Advocate Muhammad Shafay Munir, who challenged the legislation — the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023 — insisting that the plea had been filed to safeguard and secure the Constitution and independence of the judiciary.
Another similar petition was filed in the Islamabad High Court in which the petitioner contended that the right of appeal against suo motu proceedings could have been made without curtailing CJP’s powers.
