Because love is cute, but emotional manipulation? Hard pass on that drama subscription

Relationships can be magical like fairy lights, cozy coffee dates, and someone finally finishing the fries you pretended you didn’t want.

But then there are the red flags.

Not the obvious ones like “He punched a hole in the wall because the WiFi was slow," but we’re talking about the underrated, silent-but-deadly, often-ignored manipulations that sneak into your love like mosquitoes at 2 a.m., silently, persistently, and somehow targeting ONLY you.

Let’s dive into the top 7 relationship red flags so bright, you’ll need SPF 100.

If you spot these behaviours, abort mission immediately!

1. Breadcrumbing

The “I will feed you just enough hope to keep you emotionally anaemic” technique.

Picture this: You text them something sweet like, “Hope you’re having a good day”
Four days later, they respond with “you too”, as if your message was stuck at customs.

Breadcrumbing is when they give you teeny tiny crumbs, occasional flirty emojis, the promise of “we should hang sometime,” and just enough enthusiasm to keep you hooked.
It’s not dating. It’s emotional intermittent fasting that'll always leave you unfulfilled, and make you do the chase for more.

2. Pocketing

They love you… secretly. Like you're their backup phone they swear they ‘never really use.’

Pocketing is when someone refuses to introduce you to their close friends, family, coworkers, or anyone.
You start wondering if you’re a secret, a worthy prize, or a glitch in their simulation that they secretly are embarassed of.

If you’re in a relationship for 6 months and the only person who knows about you is their car driver, RUN!

Always know that you're worthy enough to be known, to be loved loudly! So the next time you say: “Can I meet your friends?”
And they say: “They’re very introverted." To which you inquire “How introverted?” that they brush your concern under the rug by responding:

“They’re currently in Bali. They’ll be back in… never,”

You pack your bags and leave for Bali (to come back in never) too!

3. Love bombing

The fireworks show they put on before the emotional electricity goes out.

This is when someone showers you with affection, gifts, and Shakespeare-level poetry in the first week that you think you’ve met your soulmate, your destiny, your cosmic beloved.
No.
Congratulations, you’ve met someone trying to fast-track intimacy so they can manipulate you later. Fasten your seatbelt for toxicity 101 awaits you.

Here's how the trajectory of such relationships go:
Day 3:
Them: “I’ve never felt this way before.”
Day 6:
Them: “My mother wants to meet you.”
Day 9:
Them: “Here’s a playlist I made of songs about our future house.”
Day 12:
Them: Then vanishes and ghost like they never existed in the first place.

4. Promiscuity disguised as 'freedom'

“I believe in open relationships… but only for me.”

This is when someone pretends they’re so spiritual and so evolved and so non-possessive, that they simply cannot commit.
But somehow, they want all the benefits of a committed relationship - your time, energy, emotional labor, all while they “explore themselves.”

In other words, they want you to be loyal while they treat Muzz Shaadi App and halal dating like a loyalty program.

5. Gaslighting

Making you question reality, your memory, and sometimes your own name.

Gaslighters are Olympic-level mind-benders! You say, “You yelled at me yesterday.”
They reply, “Yesterday? Babe, time isn’t even real.”

Or you tell them, “I saw you liking your ex’s pictures.”
Them: “That wasn’t me.”
You: “Your username is literally your name.”
Them: “You’re imagining things, of course! Now you're accusing me of cheating? I, who has always loved you so much, poor me. How could you even think that?"

6. Future faking

Talking about your future kids’ names… but forgetting your birthday every single year.

This is when someone outlines a whole fantasy life:

“We’ll get a place together.”
“We should look at baby names.”
“Our wedding playlist is basically done.”
“We’ll do a destination wedding in PC Bhurban.”

But they haven’t committed to actual plans and don't know what they're doing next Tuesday.

And even if you ask, “So… are we meeting tomorrow?”
They'll very confidently reply: “Why focus on tomorrow when I’m thinking about forever?”

7. The I’m Not Ready' Manipulation

Keeping you on a leash until something better appears.

This is when they say things like:

“I’m just not ready for a relationship right now.”
“I’m healing.”
“I need time.”
And then proceed to behave as if you are their partner, but without the actual commitment, boundaries, or emotional availability.

If these red flags show up, don’t stack them up like Jenga blocks, because it will collapse, and guess who’s underneath? You.
Do not put them on your Pinterest board titled “Why my therapist is rich.”

Just walk away.

Because the right person won’t breadcrumb you, pocket you, love-bomb you, gaslight you, or treat your heart like a part-time internship.
