Specialised officers to handle cases amid rising concern over child abuse

Punjab has proposed the establishment of 36 specialised units dedicated to the investigation of sexual offences, particularly those committed against children, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Monday.

According to the report, the existing investigation wing has been deemed inadequate for effectively handling such cases, prompting the recommendation for separate units to ensure faster and more efficient inquiries.

A decision has been taken to set up the Special Sexual Offences Investigation Units (SSOIU) within the Crime Control Department (CCD).

The channel reported that the Punjab Police have also sought formal approval from the provincial cabinet for the creation of these 36 investigative units.

Under the proposed system, sexual crimes will now be investigated exclusively by specially trained officers. The Home Department has already prepared the draft outlining the formation of these units.

The plan also includes measures to further strengthen the Crime Control Department, with officials stating that a new mechanism will be introduced to eliminate delays in the investigation of sexual offence cases.
