A joint parliamentary meeting of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and other opposition parties was held at Parliament House on Wednesday where lawmakers discussed the regional security situation, national issues and political developments in Pakistan.
The meeting of the Joint Opposition Parliamentary Party of the National Assembly and Senate took place in Committee Room No. 2 of Parliament House. Participants unanimously passed a resolution expressing concern over the regional situation and calling for diplomatic efforts to ensure peace and stability.
The opposition strongly condemned attacks carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran, describing them as violations of international law and state sovereignty. The meeting emphasized that every sovereign state has the right to self-defence and stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations for global peace.
The resolution also urged Muslim countries not to allow their territory, airspace or resources to be used against any other country under external pressure. Participants expressed sorrow over the reported martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and others, while condemning attacks targeting civilian populations.
The meeting also congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on assuming the leadership of Iran and expressed hope that under his leadership the country would move toward stability, development and national unity while playing a constructive role in promoting peace and cooperation in the Muslim world.
Citing Article 40 of the Constitution of Pakistan, the opposition emphasized that Pakistan should promote brotherly relations and Islamic solidarity among Muslim countries while prioritizing diplomacy and dialogue to reduce tensions in the region. The resolution also called on the government and the international community to take immediate diplomatic steps for a ceasefire and de-escalation.
The meeting further discussed the legal cases against former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, stating that the cases were politically motivated and should be dismissed through judicial process. It expressed concern over Khan’s health condition while he remains incarcerated at Adiala Jail.
Participants noted that Khan had been shifted to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) twice within a short period for treatment and raised concerns about the availability of specialized medical care, including a retina specialist, and restrictions on access to his personal doctors and family members. In view of his reported deteriorating health, the opposition demanded his immediate release under provisions of the Pakistan Prison Rules and Criminal Procedure Code of Pakistan.
The meeting also expressed concern over rising tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan and urged both countries to resolve issues through patience and diplomatic engagement while ensuring the safety of civilians. It also called for Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan to be treated with dignity in accordance with international law and humanitarian principles.
Additionally, the opposition demanded that the government take parliament and opposition parties into confidence regarding Pakistan’s defence agreements and policy decisions in light of the evolving regional situation, emphasizing the need for national consensus on matters of security.
The participants concluded by reaffirming their commitment to the struggle for democracy, the supremacy of the constitution and the protection of public rights in Pakistan, urging all political and social groups to unite for the national cause.
