Showing intolerance toward dissenting voices, Bollywood removed Pakistani actress Mawra Hocane’s image from the Spotify poster of the 2016 film Sanam Teri Kasam, following her outspoken condemnation of India’s recent missile attacks on Pakistan.
According to a leading entertainment portal, the poster update came shortly after a social media spat between Hocane and Indian actor Harshvardhan Rane.
The tensions began after India conducted late-night missile strikes on Pakistani territory last week, a blatant violation of sovereignty that claimed innocent lives. Pakistan's armed forces responded swiftly and effectively.
Many Pakistani celebrities raised their voice against Indian aggression, including Mawra Hocane, who called the attack a “cowardly action” and stood firmly with her country.
Rane reacted by sharing Mawra’s comments on Instagram, expressing his disapproval and declaring, “After reading the direct comments made about my country, I have decided to respectfully decline to be a part of Sanam Teri Kasam Part 2 if there is any possibility of the previous cast being repeated.”
Hocane did not stay silent. lashed out at Rane’s opportunism, calling out his timing and self-serving attitude amid a grave geopolitical crisis:
“Children in my country died due to an unjustified cowardly attack… and this is what you come up with ... a PR statement to get attention? What a pity.”
“Our countries have been at war… and you use this time to seek relevance? Shameful. My country above everything else! Pakistan Zindabad.”
Just months ago, Sanam Teri Kasam was enjoying renewed attention following speculation about a sequel and Mawra Hocane’s high-profile marriage announcement.
However, the sudden shift in Bollywood’s tone reveals the long-standing cultural bias against Pakistani artists, one that re-emerges every time they refuse to bow to false narratives.
Despite the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, the cultural war waged by Bollywood against Lollywood remains unabated.
But for many in Pakistan, Mawra Hocane’s bold stance has only strengthened her image … not just as an artist, but as a patriot who stands tall when it matters most.
Actress Hina Altaf remarked: “It doesn’t matter as Mawra stands strong with her own people.”
