Questions have been raised over police handling of a high-profile drug case after the accused, identified as Anmol alias Pinky, was presented before a city court in Karachi Tuesday without handcuffs and without any visible female police personnel accompanying her.
According to court proceedings, Karachi police produced the accused in connection with a narcotics case registered at the Garden Police Station.
Eyewitnesses said the investigating officer continued to closely follow the accused inside the court premises, while the suspect appeared without handcuffs.
The unusual presentation of the accused drew attention inside the court, particularly due to the apparent absence of female police officers during the proceedings.
During the hearing, the investigating officer requested a 14-day physical remand of the accused, stating that two packets of hashish and other narcotics had been recovered from her possession. Police told the court that the estimated value of the seized drugs exceeded Rs1.5 million.
However, the court rejected the police request for physical remand and ordered that the accused be sent to jail on judicial remand.
Following the incident, Additional IG Azad Khan took strict notice of the matter and sought a report from the DIG South regarding the circumstances under which the accused was presented in court without handcuffs.
The Additional IG also directed an inquiry to determine the role and responsibility of the officers concerned in the alleged violation of standard operating procedures.
“Violation of the law and SOPs will never be tolerated,” Azad Khan said, adding that action could be taken against officials found responsible if negligence was established.
Meanwhile, an alleged audio clip attributed to Anmol alias Pinky also surfaced following her court appearance.
In the purported recording, the accused could allegedly be heard mocking efforts to arrest her, saying: “They say they will catch Pinky. Actually, you people have no sense. The day you start thinking with your mind, you will become a brand like Pinky.”
The voice in the audio further says: “There is darkness all over Karachi. If you can stop it, then stop it.”
Authorities have not officially confirmed the authenticity of the audio clip.
