Residents of the northernmost city in the United States, Utqiagvik, are now entering a unique natural phase in which the sun will not set for 84 consecutive days, 24NewsHD TV reported on Tuesday.
According to details, the sun last set in the town on May 10 at 1:48 am local time and rose again just over an hour later at 2:57 am, marking the beginning of the extended daylight period.
From now until August 2, the sun will remain continuously above the horizon, a phenomenon known as the “midnight sun,” which occurs every year in Arctic regions due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis.
Located within the Arctic Circle, Utqiagvik regularly experiences this rare cycle of continuous daylight during the summer months.
The town also witnesses the opposite extreme in winter, known as the polar night, when the sun does not rise for more than two months. During that period, typically from mid-November to late January, residents remain without direct sunlight for around 64 days.
Despite the extreme conditions, the phenomenon is a normal seasonal occurrence for communities living in Earth’s far northern latitudes.
