A recent scientific study has revealed that the daily consumption of soft drinks can be harmful not only to physical health but also to mental well-being, as it disrupts the balance of gut bacteria, increasing the likelihood of depression, 24NewsHD TV reported on Sunday.
According to findings published on a leading medical website, researchers discovered that frequent intake of carbonated and sugary beverages can negatively impact mental stability.
The study indicated that excessive sugar content in such drinks alters the composition of gut microbiota — increasing certain bacterial populations while reducing others.
This imbalance triggers inflammation in the body, which, in turn, affects brain health and emotional balance.
Experts suggested that the gut-brain connection plays a significant role in regulating mood, and disturbances in gut bacteria may lead to mental health challenges, including depression and anxiety.
The study, which examined 405 individuals already diagnosed with depression and compared them with 527 healthy participants, found a clear link between high sugar intake through soft drinks and increased symptoms of depression.
Researchers have warned that while soft drinks provide temporary energy and pleasure, their long-term effects could be damaging.
They emphasize that reducing or avoiding these beverages and maintaining a balanced diet rich in natural nutrients can help preserve both mental and physical health.
