Google has started rolling out its Gemini AI assistant to replace the traditional Google Assistant across several apps and services, beginning with the latest beta version of Google Maps, according to a report by Android Authority.
In the new update, Gemini takes over when users tap the microphone icon located in the upper-right corner of the navigation interface. Although the icon initially retains the Google Assistant’s signature colours, it changes to display Gemini’s spark icon once activated.
The new AI-powered assistant not only performs standard navigation tasks but also offers enhanced functionality. Users can now, for example, instruct Gemini to avoid toll routes, and it will automatically adjust the navigation accordingly. It also responds to general queries, such as weather updates, going beyond the limited scope of the previous Assistant.
The feature is currently being tested in the beta version and is not yet available to all users, but industry observers expect a broader rollout in the coming months as Google continues integrating Gemini across its ecosystem.
