Cillian Murphy has finally addressed rumours linking him to the role of Lord Voldemort in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series.

The Oscar-winning actor, best known for his work in Oppenheimer and Peaky Blinders, opened up about the speculation during an appearance on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast.

“I don’t know anything about that,” Murphy said when asked about playing the infamous dark wizard. “Also, it’s just really hard to follow anything Ralph Fiennes does. The man is an absolute acting legend, so good luck to whoever’s gonna fill those shoes.”

Ralph Fiennes, who originally portrayed Voldemort across the Harry Potter films, set a near-impossible standard for the role with his chilling performance.

Murphy admitted as much, suggesting that stepping into Fiennes’ shoes would be a daunting task for any actor.

In a lighthearted moment, the 48-year-old actor even joked about Voldemort’s most recognisable feature. “I’m very attached to my nose,” he quipped, referencing the villain’s famously noseless appearance.

The speculation surrounding Murphy began after online fan discussions and reports suggested that HBO’s new Harry Potter adaptation could take creative liberties with casting, potentially introducing fresh faces to iconic roles.

Given Murphy’s recent Oscar win and his reputation as a transformative performer, fans quickly circulated the idea that he would be an ideal choice to bring Voldemort to life.

Interestingly, Ralph Fiennes himself has weighed in on the idea of Murphy stepping into his old role. Speaking on Watch What Happens Live, Fiennes praised the Irish actor, saying, “Cillian is a fantastic actor. That’s a wonderful suggestion. I would be all in favour of Cillian. Yeah.”

Fiennes’ endorsement added more fuel to the fire, but for now, Murphy has made it clear that the rumours remain just that. Still, the possibility of him joining the Harry Potter universe continues to excite fans worldwide, especially as HBO prepares to launch its ambitious series reboot.

With Warner Bros. Discovery promising a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books, the casting of key characters such as Voldemort, Harry, Hermione, and Dumbledore will remain one of the most closely watched aspects of the production.
