A significant proposal aimed at empowering young people has been placed before the Punjab Assembly, calling for a reduction in the minimum legal driving age from 18 to 16 years.
The resolution was submitted by Member of the Punjab Assembly Sheikh Imtiaz Mahmood, who highlighted that the youth population in Punjab has grown to an estimated 60 to 70 percent of the total population. According to the resolution, this large and dynamic segment of society has the potential to play a vital role in economic growth, skill development, and employment generation.
The resolution points out that in many developed countries around the world, the minimum driving age is already set at 16 years. It further notes that countries such as Canada, Germany, and France allow underage or graduated driving, providing young people with early mobility and independence.
Sheikh Imtiaz Mahmood urged the Punjab government to follow international practices and reduce the minimum driving age from 18 to 16 years. The resolution states that such a move would support the economic independence of young people by enabling them to access education, training, and job opportunities more easily.
It further emphasizes that the early economic inclusion of youth would not only benefit individuals but also contribute positively to the overall economy of the country. The proposal is being seen as a step toward greater youth empowerment and increased participation in economic activities across Punjab.
