The newly-appointed judges of the Supreme Court will now take oath of their offices on Friday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
The Supreme Court issued a notice on Thursday after the approval from Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Yahya Afridi about the oath-taking ceremony which will be held at 9:00 am tomorrow.
Six permanent judges and one temporary judge will take oath.
Earlier, six permanent and one ad hoc Supreme Court (SC) judges, whose names had been approved by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) at its meeting and whose oath-taking ceremony was due to be held today (Thursday), was postponed after a delay in the issuance of notification for their appointment.
The JCP, which met on Monday with Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Yahya Afridi in the chair, had approved the appointment of six high court judges to the apex court.
Sources told 24News TV channel that the commission had approved the elevation of Justice Aamir Farooq, Sindh High Court Chief Justice Shafi Siddiqui, Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Hashim Kakar, Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim, Sindh High Court’s Justice Salahuddin, and Peshawar High Court’s Justice Shakeel Ahmed to the SC.
The JCP also appointed Justice Gul Hassan as an ad hoc judge under Article 181, the sources added.
Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Munib Akhtar, who had earlier urged the CJP to defer the JCP meeting, boycotted the session, insiders reported.
However, Barrister Ali Zafar, despite initially opposing the meeting, attended to express his reservations.
CJP’s cause list cancelled
The cause list of two-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Yahya Afridi was cancelled as he will handle chamber work today (Thursday).
Supreme Court’s Bench 2 headed Justice Mansoor Ali Shah will hear their cases at Bench 1.
As many as 40 cases were due to be presented before two-judge bench consisting of Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Waheed today.
