Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) President Professor Rizwan Taj has announced that action will be taken against medical and dental colleges charging excessive tuition fees.
In an informal conversation with the media, Prof Taj said show-cause notices have been issued to 12 institutions that have reportedly collected fees above the prescribed limit. He added that any excess fees collected will either be refunded to students or adjusted in the following academic year.
Some of the colleges have reportedly approached the courts over the issue, but Prof Taj emphasized that it will be mandatory for all medical colleges to provide financial justification for any increase in fees. Any fee hike will only be approved after proper valuation.
The announcement follows the PMDC’s January 30 directive setting the maximum tuition fee for MBBS and BDS programs in private medical and dental colleges nationwide.
According to the directive, the maximum fee—including all additional charges—was fixed at Rs 18 lakh for the 2024–25 session. With the 5% increase announced on October 6, 2025, the fee for the 2025–26 session will rise to Rs 18.9 lakh for all annual students.
The PMDC also clarified that any fee increase after 2026 will be linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), and a separate notification will be issued. Private colleges have been strictly directed to comply fully with this fee structure, with strict action to be taken in case of any violations.
