Hanif Abbasi, KPT chief agree to improve cargo transportation

Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi met with Karachi Port Trust (KPT) Chairman Rear Admiral (retd) Shahid Ahmed during his visit to Karachi, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Tuesday.

The meeting agreed on strengthening the railway system for cargo transportation from Karachi Port.

On the occasion, Hanif Abbasi announced major reform measures in cargo transport.

Federal Minister said there are serious consideration on cargo transportation through rail instead of roads. 

Hanif Abbasi said the meeting also agreed on a joint strategy to improve the logistics performance of Karachi Port. Pakistan Railways will significantly increase its overall cargo handling capacity, Hanif Abbasi said.

He said the strategic importance of Karachi Port in national and international trade is key.

Railways Minister said ML-1 project will start from Karachi Port in July 2026. 

The 54-km long railway section from KPT to Pipri will be upgraded, he added.

Hanif Abbasi said Pakistan Railways will operate four freight trains daily in the next five months. 

KPT Chairman Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed said bulk cargo Rail will be given priority for transportation. 

He said KPT will upgrade its internal railway tracks.

Hanif Abbasi sad Railway infrastructure connected to Karachi Port will be made more efficient.
