The government and the opposition have reached an agreement on the appointment of the leader of the opposition, with Mehmood Khan Achakzai set to take the position in the National Assembly, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Tuesday.
According to the details, the National Assembly session was still underway when Speaker Ayaz Sadiq summoned opposition leaders to his chamber, where he met Barrister Gohar, Asad Qaiser and Aamir Dogar.
The meeting between NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq and the opposition leaders continued for nearly an hour.
Sources said both the government and the opposition have agreed on the nomination of Mehmood Khan Achakzai as the opposition leader, and the Speaker will now complete the legal formalities before issuing the formal notification.
Speaking after the meeting, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar said all objections to the nomination papers had been removed, and the signatures would be verified by tomorrow.
He added that the opposition leader would be announced on Thursday, and by Friday’s National Assembly session, their own nominee would be in office.
PTI leader Aamir Dogar confirmed that the opposition had unanimously proposed only one name, Mehmood Khan Achakzai.
Asad Qaiser said there should be no unnecessary delay in the appointment of the opposition leader.
Responding to another question, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar clarified that no negotiations had taken place with the Speaker’s Office on any wider political matters.
