At least 10 people, including women and children, were killed and several others injured after landslides triggered by heavy overnight rainfall struck multiple locations in Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar district, officials said on Monday.
The dead included eight people who lost their lives in three Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhia, while one person was killed in the Chattar Ghona area of Cox's Bazar city. Another child died in a separate landslide in Pekua.
The incidents occurred on Monday as torrential rains caused hillsides to collapse in several parts of the district.
Rescue teams from the Cox's Bazar Fire Service, assisted by Rohingya volunteers, carried out overnight search and rescue operations and recovered the bodies of all 10 victims. Efforts continued to assist the injured and assess the damage.
The tragedy has cast a pall of grief over the Rohingya refugee camps and surrounding communities, where thousands of people live in makeshift shelters on unstable hillsides.
Authorities warned that the danger of further landslides remains high due to continuous rainfall. An estimated 300,000 people living in the hilly areas of Cox's Bazar Sadar, Ramu and Ukhia upazilas are considered vulnerable, raising concerns about additional casualties if the downpours continue.
Disaster management officials are monitoring the situation closely and have urged residents in landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant and move to safer locations where possible.
