The number of active taxpayers in Pakistan has exceeded 6.5 million for the first time, according to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
The increase marks a significant success in the country’s efforts to expand its tax base.
According to FBR officials, income tax return filings have reached an all-time high, reflecting the impact of strict government measures and policy reforms aimed at bringing more individuals and businesses into the tax net.
The government’s latest budget policies have adopted a strict approach towards non-filers, making tax compliance mandatory for various financial transactions. The FBR has been actively implementing penalties and restrictions on those who fail to submit their tax returns.
Officials further noted that the number of tax filers is continuously rising due to aggressive enforcement measures, digitalization of tax processes, and public awareness campaigns. The government has also been working to expand the tax net further by targeting sectors with low tax compliance.
