Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan on Thursday warned that the government’s constitutional moves could push the country toward political chaos.
In an exclusive media interview on Thursday, Barrister Gohar said that judges' resignations were a direct consequence of the government’s controversial 27th Constitutional Amendment, which he argued undermines the powers and autonomy of the Supreme Court.
“We are trying to ensure that democracy continues to function,” Gohar said. “But if these kinds of decisions are made, they will create chaos in the country and the nation.”
The PTI chairman claimed that while the Supreme Court of Pakistan remains, its integrity has been shaken. “The Supreme Court stands, but the Chief Justice is no more. He did not take oath in the Supreme Court,” Gohar said, referring to the ongoing constitutional crisis within the judiciary.
He asserted that his party would “protect the judiciary at all costs”, adding that PTI had already launched strong protests and would continue to raise the issue in the National Assembly.
“There is a big difference between the 26th and 27th constitutional amendments,” Gohar said. “You have deprived the Supreme Court of its fundamental rights. If amendments are to be made, they should strengthen institutions — not weaken them — and reflect the will of the people.”
The PTI chief reminded that the judiciary has faced political pressure before, but vowed that his party would “restore the independence of the judiciary and ensure that it remains free from interference.”
Barrister Gohar concluded by reiterating PTI’s commitment to constitutionalism and rule of law, calling the recent developments “a turning point” for Pakistan’s democratic and judicial future.
