Karachi police have foiled a major attempt to smuggle Iranian currency worth billions of rials, arresting nine suspects in a raid, 24NewsHD TV reported on Tuesday.

The operation was carried out by Keamari police following intelligence provided by Mochko police.

Police detained six men and three women allegedly linked to a wanted currency smuggling ring.

According to officials, the suspects had travelled from Balochistan to Karachi in two vehicles when they were intercepted.

Police recovered 236 bundles of Iranian currency from their possession at the time of arrest.

The seized cash amounted to approximately 30.96 billion Iranian rials (approximately $22500), police said.

The arrested suspects were identified as Muhammad Asghar, Abdul Ghaffar, Bibi Sahara, Gul Seema, Bibi Afsana, Taj Muhammad, Muhammad Naseem, Naimatullah, and Anar Gul.

Officials said the suspects, along with the vehicles and recovered currency, would be handed over to the Federal Investigation Agency after completion of initial legal formalities.
