President Asif Ali Zardari has approved military awards for 1,172 personnel of the armed forces and civil armed forces and a 100-day reduction in the sentences of prisoners on the occasion of Independence Day.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, President Zardari approved several summaries sent to him by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The President also approved national awards for citizens from different fields in recognition of their services.
In another decision, the President approved the summoning of the National Assembly session at 5pm and the Senate session at 4pm on 17 August.
On the eve of Pakistan’s 80th Independence Day, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended their greetings to the nation and called on Pakistanis to play their part in the country’s progress in whatever field they serve.
In his Independence Day message, President Zardari said August 14 was a day to remember the sacrifices that made Pakistan possible.
He said independence was not only a historic achievement but also a responsibility that every generation must carry forward.
He said the events surrounding Marka-e-Haq had shown that Pakistan not only sought peace but also had the resolve and ability to defend its sovereignty and national interests.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message, said that Pakistan’s journey towards national development and prosperity was moving towards a brighter future despite the challenges along the way.
He said Pakistan’s armed forces had repeatedly demonstrated their ability to defend the country during difficult times and in response to hostile attacks.
The Prime Minister also said the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye was evidence of Pakistan’s effective regional role and growing strategic strength.
