Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha has called for Sunday’s politically charged ICC Men’s T20 World Cup encounter against India to be played in the right spirit, amid tensions that have historically complicated the high-profile fixture, 24NewsHD TV reported on Saturday.
Speaking to media persons in pre match press conference in Colombo, Agha stressed the significance of the fixture and the responsibilities of leadership.
“India v Pakistan is a game of high magnitude; tomorrow’s game is no different,” he said. “It’s an added responsibility when you are the captain and representing your country. You cannot run away from that pressure — you just need to find a way to deal with it.”
The teams face each other for the first time since last year’s Asia Cup final, a match staged shortly after a military conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbours nearly escalated into full-scale war.
Pakistan had initially threatened to boycott the World Cup clash following Bangladesh’s removal from the tournament for refusing to play in India over security concerns, but later withdrew the threat after ICC negotiations secured a compromise.
Agha also expressed uncertainty over whether the customary pre‑match handshakes, which were notably absent during last year’s Asia Cup encounters in Dubai, would take place. “We’ll find out tomorrow,” he said.
Both teams have won their opening two matches of the tournament, setting the stage for a high-stakes contest.
Agha also commented on India’s injury concern over explosive opener Abhishek Sharma, who is battling a stomach bug. “I hope he plays tomorrow. We want to play against the best,” he added.
With rain forecast for Sunday in Colombo, Agha assured that Pakistan are ready to adapt to a shortened match if needed.
