Growing tensions in the Gulf region are beginning to have visible implications for India’s economy, with international institutions warning of a potential economic setback linked to regional instability.

A recent report by the United Nations Development Programme United Nations Development Programme suggests that ongoing developments in the Middle East could contribute to rising poverty levels in India, potentially affecting millions of people.

The report warns that if instability continues, as many as 2.5 million additional people in India could fall below the poverty line, bringing the total number to an estimated 354 million. It adds that such a scenario could further expose existing weaknesses in the country’s economic structure.

According to the findings, the agricultural sector may also come under pressure, with concerns that the kharif crop cycle could be affected. This, the report notes, could heighten the risk of food insecurity in the country.

The analysis further highlights possible slowdowns in business activity and a reduction in employment opportunities, with several job sectors potentially facing significant risks if external conditions worsen.

Economists cited in the report suggest that prolonged regional instability could amplify structural vulnerabilities in India’s economy, particularly in areas already facing inflationary pressure and uneven growth.

The findings underscore growing concerns over the interconnected nature of global economies, where geopolitical tensions in one region can have far-reaching consequences elsewhere.
