The United States announced a new top diplomat Wednesday for its embassy in Caracas, which was reopened in March after a US military operation ousted longtime Venezuelan strongman Nicolas Maduro.
Temporary mission head Laura Dogu said on X that she was being replaced by John Barrett, a career diplomat who has been heading the embassy in Guatemala since January.
"I am pleased to announce that John Barrett will soon arrive in Venezuela to assume the functions of charge d'affaires," Dogu wrote in a Spanish-language statement posted on the Caracas embassy's X account.
With no formal ambassador named to Venezuela, Barrett, like Dogu, will run the mission under the title of charge d'affaires.
Diplomatic relations between Venezuela and the United States were broken in 2019 and restored on March 5 in the aftermath of the US military assault to arrest Maduro.
Maduro was toppled from power on January 3 and moved to the United States to face trial on drugs trafficking and weapons charges.
Venezuela is currently led by interim president Delcy Rodriguez, who is cooperating under heavy US pressure to meet President Donald Trump's demands for access to the country's oil.
Longstanding US economic sanctions on Venezuela are gradually being relaxed.
