White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has said that a potential second round of talks between the United States and Iran is likely to be held at the same location (Islamabad) as previous discussions, while strongly praising Pakistan’s role as the sole mediator in the ongoing negotiations.
Responding to questions during a press briefing, Leavitt indicated that Islamabad remains central to the diplomatic process.
“The Pakistanis have been incredible mediators throughout this process and we really appreciate their friendship and their efforts to bring this deal to a close,” she said.
She emphasized that Pakistan continues to serve as the only channel for communication between the two sides, despite interest from other countries.
“While there have been many countries around the world who want to offer their help, the president feels it is important to streamline this communication through the Pakistanis,” she added.
Leavitt also dismissed reports suggesting that Washington had sought an extension of a ceasefire with Tehran, clarifying that discussions remain ongoing.
“At this moment, we remain very much engaged in these talks,” she said, noting that both Donald Trump and JD Vance had described the negotiations as productive.
She further stated that while there have been reports about possible in-person meetings, no final decision has been announced. “Nothing is official until you hear it from us here at the White House,” she added.
On the security front, Leavitt confirmed that the US naval blockade on vessels entering and leaving Iranian ports remains in place, though she declined to provide a timeline for its continuation. She clarified that the restrictions apply to Iranian ports along the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
At the same time, she said US forces in the region are ensuring freedom of navigation for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports.
