The National Institute of Health (NIH) on Monday issued an important public health advisory for the prevention and control of seasonal influenza H3N2, following a noticeable rise in cases during the current flu season.
According to the advisory, Influenza A (H3N2) subclade has emerged globally and is showing a rapid increase in several regions of the world. The NIH noted that influenza cases rose across South Asia between May and November 2025, reflecting a broader regional trend. Significant numbers of H3N2 cases have also been reported in Australia and New Zealand.
In Pakistan, surveillance data indicates that 12 percent of the samples tested were found positive for H3N2. In Islamabad alone, 66 percent of reported influenza cases have been identified as H3N2, highlighting the need for increased awareness and preventive measures.
Health experts have warned that elderly individuals, pregnant women, children and patients suffering from chronic diseases are at a higher risk of developing severe complications from the virus. The NIH emphasized that vaccination remains the most effective method to prevent influenza and reduce the severity of illness.
The advisory urges citizens to adopt preventive practices, including maintaining proper hand hygiene, following correct coughing and sneezing etiquette, and avoiding crowded places whenever possible. Health authorities have stressed that timely precautions and vaccination can play a vital role in limiting the spread of the virus and protecting vulnerable populations.
The NIH continues to monitor the situation closely and has encouraged the public to remain vigilant and follow health guidelines to ensure collective safety during the flu season.
