US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that Donald Trump would be willing to meet Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, if the latter expressed a desire for talks, underscoring Washington’s stated preference for diplomacy over confrontation, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Sunday.
Speaking in an interview on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Rubio said President Trump favours reaching an agreement with Iran and remains open to direct engagement at the highest level.
“President Trump is prepared to meet anyone,” Rubio said, arguing that complex global disputes can only be resolved through dialogue. He added that if Ayatollah Khamenei were to request a meeting even as early as tomorrow, such talks could take place.
Rubio stressed that a potential meeting would not signal agreement between the two leaders, but rather reflect Trump’s belief that diplomatic engagement remains the most effective path to resolving longstanding tensions.
