Pakistan's ship recycling industry has marked a major milestone with the resumption of operations at the Gadani Ship Breaking Yard after an eight-year hiatus, as seven vessels have arrived for dismantling, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
The revival follows reforms introduced by the Maritime Task Force, with the support of the National Logistics Corporation.
The federal government has also granted the ship recycling sector formal industrial status as part of efforts to revive and modernize the industry.
As part of the modernization drive, Gadani's 9 yards have been upgraded as per the international standards.
The government will also establish a modern Treatment, Storage, and Disposal facility at Gadani to ensure environmentally safe waste management and protect the coastal ecosystem and marine life.
Officials say each recycled vessel is expected to contribute around 25 million dollars to the national economy, while a fully operational Gadani facility will meet about 30 percent of Pakistan's steel scrap demand.
The resumption of ship recycling at Gadani is being viewed as a significant boost to Pakistan's maritime economy, industrial growth, and sustainable development.
