Former Japan international Keisuke Honda has claimed that a US company cancelled an advertising agreement with him after he publicly expressed support for Iran’s participation in the FIFA World Cup, 24NewsHD TV reported on Sunday.
According to reports, the former Japanese football star revealed on the social media platform X that a planned commercial campaign tied to the World Cup was called off after he shared his personal views regarding Iran’s national team amid ongoing debate over the country’s place in the tournament.
In his post, Honda acknowledged the sensitivity of the issue but said he believed the Iran national football team should be allowed to take part in the World Cup.
“I know this is a very sensitive matter, but personally I want Iran’s national team to participate in the World Cup,” Honda wrote.
Following that statement, a US-based company reportedly decided to suspend and ultimately cancel an advertising deal that had already been agreed upon with the former midfielder.
The campaign had been scheduled to run during the World Cup, but was withdrawn after his comments sparked concern.
Reacting to the decision, Honda expressed disappointment and criticized what he described as a lack of understanding behind such corporate moves.
Honda, known for speaking openly on social and political issues during and after his playing career, has often taken public positions on matters beyond football.
