Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Moonis Elahi got significant legal relief as Interpol formally closed a two-year investigation initiated on Shehbaz government's request, sources confirmed on Saturday.
Pakistani authorities had sought Moonis Elahi’s extradition from Spain, alleging his involvement in murder, fraud and abuse of power. However, according to sources familiar with the development, Interpol conducted a thorough review of the complaints and found no evidence to support the allegations. As a result, the Barcelona-based politician has been removed from international alert lists.
Moonis Elahi’s lawyer welcomed the decision, calling it a “clean chit” and describing the outcome as a victory for justice. He criticized Pakistani authorities for filing what he termed baseless cases that caused Moonis Elahi unnecessary distress.
The lawyer further stated that Moonis Elahi remains firm in his political stance and will continue to stand by the founder of PTI, underscoring his commitment to the party’s leadership despite the legal pressures he has faced.
The development marks a major turning point for the PTI leader, who has long maintained his innocence in the face of the allegations.
