Senior PPP leader Agha Siraj Durrani passes away

Senior PPP leader and former Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani breathed his last at a hospital in Karachi on Wednesday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Agha Siraj Durrani had been under treatment at Dr Ziauddin Hospital for the last three weeks.

Agha Siraj Durrani was born on October 5, 1953, in Garhi Yasin, Shikarpur district. He belonged to a prominent political family of Sindh.

Durrani received his early education from St. Patrick’s High School, Karachi, before earning a Bachelor of Commerce and later an LLB degree from Sindh Muslim Law College.

He began his political career in the 1980s, contesting his first election in 1985, and formally joined the Pakistan Peoples Party in 1988, winning his first provincial assembly seat the same year.

Agha Siraj Durrani was elected Speaker of the Sindh Assembly on May 31, 2013, and held the position until February 25, 2024, one of the longest-serving speakers in the province’s history.

During his tenure, he also served as acting Governor of Sindh on several occasions.

His leadership in the Assembly was marked by his assertive style and deep understanding of parliamentary traditions.

His father Agha Saddruddin and uncle Agha Baddruddin had also served as the provincial assembly speakers.

Expressing deep grief and shock over the demise of Durrani, President Asif Ali Zardari has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, Agha Siraj Durrani.

PM Shehbaz condoles

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday expressed grief over the death of former Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani.

The prime minister, in a statement, paid tribute to late Agha Siraj Durrani for his services as the Sindh Assembly speaker, saying that his contributions to politics and public welfare would always be remembered.

He prayed for the forgiveness of the deceased soul and strength for the bereaved family to bear the loss.
