A significant development has occurred in a high-profile theft case in Lahore’s Defence locality, where law enforcement authorities have taken a domestic worker, identified as Mehrin, into custody, whose background has proven far more complex than initially thought.
Investigators have linked her to a series of criminal activities across several cities, indicating a well-established pattern of deceit and theft.
Investigation officials have revealed that Mehrin, a native of Faisalabad, has previously served time in an Islamabad jail, where she received an award for her sewing skills, presented to her during incarceration by none other than the former Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan himself.
The case, which began as a simple complaint in December 2024 by a citizen named Shaukat Mehmood at Defence Police Station, ultimately revealed her deep involvement in organised theft.
As per the complaint, Mehrin had drugged the entire household by mixing intoxicants in their tea. Once the residents lost consciousness, she made away with gold jewellery, cash, and other valuables worth over 6.5 million rupees.
However, this was not Mehrin’s first offence. Police confirm that she is a suspect in multiple theft cases across Lahore and is currently under arrest at the Ferozabad Police Station in connection with three other burglary cases. She was initially arrested within that jurisdiction, and following identification by victims from the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) incident, she was formally charged in the Defence case as well.
Mehrin is accused of robbing homes in the Clifton and Gizri areas of Karachi too, resulting in losses reportedly worth crores of rupees, according to police statements.
She would never carry a mobile phone or a national identity card. The thefts were all executed either on her very first day of employment, except in the DHA case, where she committed the crime on the third day. At the time of the DHA incident, the only device she had was an old keypad mobile phone.
She never provided her CNIC to any employer and disappeared before it was even requested.
Adding further depth to the case, police have confirmed that Mehrin is a convicted repeat offender, known for her calculated and methodical approach. She claimed that she is married to an unemployed man who is allegedly addicted to methamphetamine, commonly referred to as "ice." Formerly a tailor by profession, he shares a similar background with Mehrin, who also worked in ladies’ tailoring before becoming fully involved in criminal activities.
Authorities say she is currently under further interrogation, with the expectation of uncovering more leads, networks, and possibly an even wider ring of similar criminal activity.
