The Election Commission of Pakistan has sent an important letter to Prime Minister regarding holding of local body elections in Cantonment Boards, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday.
In the letter, the Chief Election Commissioner said that holding of local body elections is the constitutional and legal responsibility of the Election Commission under the Constitution and the Election Act.
The last local body elections in Cantonment Boards were held on September 12, 2021 while the term of Cantonment Boards has completed on April 11, 2026.
According to the Election Commission, holding elections within 120 days of the expiry of the term is a legal requirement.
The Election Commission has completed the delimitation of all 42 Cantonment Boards on April 20, 2026.
The Election Commission said that all preparations are complete to hold elections in Cantonment Boards.
According to the Election Commission, under the law, an election programme can be issued only after receiving a written request from the federal government.
The Chief Election Commissioner appealed to the Prime Minister for immediate intervention and provision of a written request.
