The Punjab government has unveiled an ambitious package of initiatives for the arts and entertainment sector in its 2026-27 budget, allocating Rs55 billion for a state-of-the-art Film City and doubling financial assistance for artists, 24NewsHD TV reported on Tuesday.
A sum of Rs55 billion has been earmarked for the development of a 50-acre Film City that will offer world-class facilities, including modern film studios, sound stages, visual effects (VFX) units, post-production laboratories and other advanced production infrastructure aimed at supporting filmmakers and content creators.
Plans for the facility also include purpose-built shooting sets, a central lake for large-scale productions, and a convention hall to host international events and award ceremonies.
Additionally, a media trade hub and specialised film and music schools are expected to be part of the complex, supporting both industry growth and talent development.
As part of the initiative, Pakistan’s first dedicated Film School will also be established to train aspiring professionals in filmmaking, television production and other creative disciplines.
The government has further approved the Punjab Film City Authority Act, the first legislation of its kind in the province, to provide an institutional framework for the revival and growth of the film and drama industry.
Several new projects for the cultural sector have also been included in the upcoming fiscal year's development plans.
Among them is a Theatre Revival Programme to be launched under the supervision of the Alhamra Arts Council with the participation of the private sector, aimed at promoting performing arts and strengthening theatre activities across Punjab.
In another significant step, the provincial government has increased financial assistance for artists by 100 percent in the 2026-27 fiscal year.
In a landmark move, the provincial government has also approved the Punjab Film City Authority Act, the first legislation of its kind designed to support the revival and development of the film and drama industry in the province.
