An important constitutional requirement of appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and two members has turned into a letter-writing exercise, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Sunday.

According to government sources, the Speaker National Assembly has sent the Opposition leader's letter to the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs for further action. Further, the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs wrote a letter to the Prime Minister for guidance on this issue. However, government has decided that nomination of candidates first and then formation of a parliamentary committee, sources said.

The opposition leader will have to approach the Prime Minister on the nomination issue because the current chief and members have constitutional protection until the appointment process is completed. Sources said that the government is in no hurry to bring in a replacement for the current members. If candidates do not come forward, the formation of the committee is pointless, government sources said.
