The members of the Punjab Assembly, while announcing the green revolution with the construction of the Mahfouz Shaheed Canal, said that this is a good step to make the barren areas of Cholistan cultivable, reported the 24NewsHD TV channel on Sunday.
They said that this step has been taken under the Green Pakistan Initiative to make the barren lands cultivable. The public representatives of southern Punjab have called the construction of the Mahfouz Shaheed Canal the need of the hour.
Member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab Wasif Mazhar Raan said some people are spreading misinformation about the canal as this canal originates from the Sutlej River.
He said the construction of this canal will also help to stop India's water aggression and will bring about a green revolution in the areas of South Punjab and Cholistan.
The future of the people of Cholistan and South Punjab will be improved by making better use of water resources, Wasif Mazhar Raan said.
He said proper irrigation of crops and lands will improve the condition of farmers, which will also improve Punjab and Pakistan.
He said this green revolution will provide cheap food to the people; agricultural commodities will be exported, which will give us a large foreign exchange.
Member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab Mian Kamran Abdullah Maral said in this regard, "I want to tell the brothers of Punjab that the canals that are being dug will settle new areas."
Earlier, due to the absence of canals, all this water was wasted by being drained into the sea, Mian Kamran Abdullah Maral said.
These canals will settle the barren areas of Thal and Cholistan, which will improve our economy, Mian Kamran Abdullah Maral said.
He further said that canals should also be dug in Balochistan so that new areas can be settled.
There has been a severe shortage of water in southern Punjab before, and our brothers will benefit from the new canals, Mian Kamran Abdullah said.
He said wrong propaganda is being done regarding canals; water from the Sutlej River will be used for this.
New canals should be built so that water is not wasted and Pakistan's economic development will increase, Mian Kamran said.
In this regard, PTI Member of National Assembly Mian Ghaus Muhammad said Pakistan's current issue is new canals, and the barren lands of Punjab are being developed in the name of Green Pakistan.
If the water that is drained from these canals into the sea is used for farming, it will be beneficial, Mian Ghaus Muhammad said.
He said that we are an agricultural country, but sometimes we import rice, sometimes sugar, and sometimes wheat, and we import all these agricultural goods by paying dollars, while the canal system will also save dollars.
The new canal system will develop barren lands, and people will also get employment, Mian Ghaus Muhammad said.
My constituency is Cholistan, where about 1.5 million people will also benefit from these canals, Mian Ghaus Muhammad further said.
I think these canals should be drained instead of this water being wasted by being dumped into the ocean, he concluded.
