Iran has been elected as a member of the General Committee of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna, despite reported efforts by the United States to block its selection.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, a meeting of the General Committee was held during the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, where member states voted on Iran’s selection. Iran received enough support from IAEA member countries to become a member of the committee.
Iran’s mission to the United Nations said in a statement on X that IAEA member states had voted in favour of Iran’s membership. The statement described the vote as support for Iran at the international nuclear agency.
Iranian Atomic Energy Organisation spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said the United States had made every possible effort to prevent Iran from being selected, but those efforts had failed.
The vote comes amid growing tensions between Iran and Western countries over Tehran’s nuclear programme. Earlier this month, the IAEA Board of Governors passed a resolution reporting Iran to the United Nations Security Council over alleged breaches of its nuclear non-proliferation commitments. Iran rejected the move as politically motivated.
The latest development adds to the wider diplomatic dispute between Iran and the United States at the IAEA, where Tehran’s nuclear activities and its relations with international inspectors remain major issues.
