French President Emmanuel Macron called on India to back the suspension of military strikes targeting civilians and infrastructure in the Russia-Ukraine war, after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.

Macron, speaking alongside Modi in Mumbai, urged him to "support the establishment of an immediate and lasting moratorium on attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure", he told reporters.

New Delhi and Moscow have longstanding ties.

Russian and Ukrainian negotiators began US-brokered talks in Geneva on Tuesday seeking to end the four-year war.

Just hours earlier, heavy Russian bombing raids struck energy infrastructure in several regions of Ukraine overnight.
