Lahore High Court has expressed dismay with Punjab government for not increasing fine and punishment for keeping lions in homes by pet and animal lovers, reported 24NewsHDTV Channel.
LHC Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh heard the petition filed by a female petitioner Gull Naz.
Assistant Attorney General Ahmed Raza Chatta appeared on behalf of the federal government. The petitioner's lawyer contended that pet lions were currently being kept in residential areas. Citizens have kept pets in their homes and on rooftops.
The petitioner's lawyer told the court that according to 1890 law, there is a fine of only Rs50,000 for keeping pets at home. A specific environment and place should be designated for keeping pet lions. Upon inquiry, the Additional Advocate General told the court that a committee was formed on the court order, but it is not yet active.
During the hearing Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh remarked why has the Punjab government not increased the fine for keeping pet lions at home, nor has the committee formed regarding dangerous pets been activated? He directed the government to activate the committee and submit a detail report on the issue during the next hearing.
Meanwhile, LHC has sought suggestion from concerned department for shifting of dogs and cats from Tolinton Market Lahore.
While hearing miscellaneous application, LHC Justice Shahid Kareem remarked that protection and safety of birds and pet animal is a sensitive issue therefore the court wanted to shift this market to other place.
The woman petitioner told the court that though market has been renovated and upgraded but still birds and pets are being kept in small cages in unhealthy condition.
LHC Justice Shahid Kareem told the petitioner that the court also wanted to shift the market therefore bring suggestions in this regard on next hearing after meeting Environment commission.
On the advice of member Environment commission Justice Shahid Kareem barred the petitioner from social media posts on the issue.
Later the court adjourned the hearing till June 20, 2025.
