The Government of Punjab has introduced a major change in property tax laws in the provincial budget for the fiscal year 2026–27, making it mandatory for property tax payments to be processed exclusively through online channels.
Under the new reforms, property owners will no longer be able to use traditional manual methods for submitting property tax. Instead, all payments will be made through digital platforms, a move officials say is aimed at improving transparency and reducing irregularities in tax collection.
Authorities noted that a similar digital system had already been implemented for the payment of vehicle token tax, which is now fully handled through online banking channels across the province.
The provincial administration stated that the elimination of cash-based and manual tax payment methods is part of broader efforts to modernize the revenue system and enhance accountability in public finances.
As part of the new incentives introduced in the budget, taxpayers will also receive a 5 percent discount on property tax if they opt for self-assessment of their properties.
Officials believe the self-assessment facility, combined with the online payment system, will encourage voluntary compliance and improve efficiency in the tax collection process.
The reforms are expected to significantly change the way property taxation is managed in Punjab, marking another step toward digital governance in the province.
