India's election commission announced Saturday that national polls would begin on April 19, with Hindu-nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly favoured to win a third term in the world's largest democracy.
"Date of polling would be 19th of April" for the first phase of the vote, which is staged over several weeks, chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar told a press conference.
