Bollywood’s celebrated singer Shreya Ghoshal has opened up on Arijit Singh’s recent decision to step away from playback singing, admitting that she too sometimes feels the need to take a break. Praising Arijit for his courage, Shreya reflected on the importance of passion and authenticity in music.
In a candid conversation with ABP News, Shreya Ghoshal shared her thoughts on Arijit Singh’s announcement to retire from playback singing for films. “I also feel like taking a break sometimes. He took that decision very bravely… He is a musician from the heart. He doesn’t think about why he is making music or what he will get from it. He just does what makes him happy,” Shreya said.
The singer emphasized that live performances are central to her identity as an artist, adding that she would never rely on lip-syncing. “I feel very uncomfortable with that. I will stop singing the day I have to do that,” she explained.
Shreya lauded Arijit’s sincerity and dedication, noting that it is this genuine passion that connects him deeply with audiences. “Music is bigger than everything else for Arijit, and that’s why people love him so much,” she said.
Shreya Ghoshal’s illustrious career began with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas, with music by Ismail Darbar. She won her first National Award for Best Female Playback Singer for Bairi Piya and has since sung in multiple languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam. She recently announced her The Unstoppable World Tour, with shows planned across the UK, USA, India, and Abu Dhabi.
Arijit Singh had announced on January 27 that he would be retiring from Bollywood playback singing. In a post on X, he wrote: “Hello, Happy New Year to all. I want to thank you all for giving me so much of love all these years as listeners.
I am happy to announce that I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey.”
Arijit clarified that while he will continue making music, he will not sing for Bollywood films going forward. Earlier this month, he released his first independent single Raina, composed by Sheykhar Ravjiani with lyrics by Priya Saraiya.
