Karachi Kings secured a crucial 23-run victory over Peshawar Zalmi in the 27th match of the Pakistan Super League season 10 at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
The win confirmed Karachi’s qualification for the playoff stage, marking a significant milestone in their campaign.
After being put in to bat first by Zalmi skipper Babar Azam, Karachi Kings posted a mammoth total of 237 for 4 in their allotted 20 overs.
David Warner, leading from the front, scored a brilliant 86 runs off 54 balls, laced with 11 boundaries and 2 sixes.
His aggressive yet calculated knock laid a solid foundation for a huge total.
Warner’s opening partner, James Vince, was equally effective, hammering 72 runs off just 42 balls.
The real acceleration, however, came in the latter overs when Khushdil Shah played a fiery cameo, smashing 43 runs off only 15 deliveries, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
His innings included a flurry of boundaries and sixes that propelled the team’s total close to the 240-mark.
Mohammad Nabi contributed with a steady 26 runs, while Ben McDermott failed to open his account and was dismissed for a duck. Irfan Niazi, too, could manage only 2 runs.
For Peshawar Zalmi, Luke Wood was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 2 wickets, while Ali Raza chipped in with 1 wicket. However, the Zalmi bowling attack struggled to contain Karachi’s aggressive batting, especially during the death overs.
The decision by Babar Azam to bowl first did not yield the desired outcome as the Karachi Kings’ batting lineup unleashed a brutal assault.
In response, Peshawar Zalmi fought valiantly but ultimately fell short, managing 214 for 5 in their chase of 238.
The standout performance came from Babar Azam, who played a captain’s knock of 94 runs, anchoring the innings but lacking adequate support at the other end.
Saim Ayub impressed with a brisk 47, while Tom Kohler-Cadmore added 20.
However, Mohammad Haris could only muster 9 runs, and the required run rate kept climbing beyond Zalmi’s control.
Karachi’s bowlers executed their plan with discipline.
Abbas Afridi claimed 2 wickets, while Hasan Ali and Mir Hamza took one wicket each, playing pivotal roles in containing Zalmi’s charge.
With this win, Karachi Kings not only eliminated Zalmi’s momentum but also confirmed their spot in the playoffs of PSL 10.
Meanwhile, despite Babar Azam’s heroic effort, Peshawar Zalmi will now need to reassess their strategy if they hope to remain in playoff contention.
