Election Commission of Pakistan has proposed significant amendments to the Constitution and Election Act 2017 aimed at ensuring the continuity and timely conduct of local government elections, reported 24NewsHD TV.

According to sources, the ECP has proposed amendments to Article 140-A of the Constitution to prevent tactics that could delay local government elections and ensure that elected local governments continue to function without unnecessary gaps.

One of the proposals seeks to make it mandatory to hold local government elections within 120 days after the expiry of the existing local government’s term. The ECP has also proposed restricting changes to constituency boundaries during the final year of a local government’s tenure to prevent alterations that could affect the election schedule.

The Election Commission has forwarded its proposals for amendments to the federal government for consideration.
