Pakistan Bar Council has expressed concern over the continuous rise in petroleum prices and demanded immediate measures to provide relief to the public, reported 24NewsHD TV.
A joint meeting of the Council’s Executive and Rules Committees, chaired by Vice Chairman Pir Muhammad Masood Chishti and Executive Committee Chairman Munir A. Malik, adopted a resolution on rising fuel prices and inflation.
The Council said higher petroleum prices were increasing the cost of essential goods and putting pressure on the purchasing power of ordinary citizens, particularly the middle and lower middle classes.
The resolution called for eliminating unnecessary perks, excessive remuneration packages, free fuel and unnecessary use of official vehicles, along with reducing expenditures of ministers and government officials.
The Pakistan Bar Council also rejected the proposal for a “smart lockdown”, saying it would further burden daily-wage workers, ordinary citizens and the business community.
It called for practical measures to control inflation and provide relief to the public.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had announced a “relief scheme” for owners of motorcycles, rickshaws and vehicles of up to 800cc. Under the scheme, owners of two and three wheeled vehicles will receive a subsidy of Rs100 per litre on a monthly quota of 20 litres, while those owning vehicles of up to 800cc will receive the same subsidy on a monthly quota of 30 litres.
