Islamabad Police have released Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Salman Akram Raja after briefly taking him into custody and shifting him to Nilore Police Station, sources said.

According to sources, Raja was released following the intervention of senior police officers.

Police had earlier taken the PTI secretary general into custody and moved him to Nilore Police Station.

PTI leader Shaukat Basra and Akhwanzada Hussain Yousafzai, spokesperson for the Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Aain-e-Pakistan, had also confirmed Raja's detention by police.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan strongly condemned the detention and demanded Raja's immediate release.

Gohar said Raja had remained in police custody for around two hours.

The PTI chairman also claimed that approximately 700 party workers had been arrested during the past few days.

He further said arrest warrants had been issued against members of the National Assembly and provincial assemblies.

Gohar described the arrests and issuance of warrants as illegal and called for an immediate end to the practice.

Raja was subsequently released after senior police officers intervened, according to sources.

Authorities had not immediately issued a detailed statement explaining the grounds for his detention or subsequent release.
