National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Lt General Inam Haider Malik said on Monday that so far 670 people had been killed, while close to 1,000 were injured in rain-related incidents across the country, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Addressing a press conference, with Federal Information Minister Ataullah Tarar and Federal Minister for Energy Musadik Malik sitting alongside him, he said that 80 to 90 people were also missing.
The NDMA chairman further said that two more powerful spells of monsoon rains would follow the present one, which was the seventh one and would end on August 22. “However, the situation will become normal by September-end.”
He added that glaciers were melting fast on account of global warming. “Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir are at risk because of the melting of glaciers.”
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Energy Musadik Malik said the federal government was making efforts to compensate the flood-affected people for their losses. “The government is working with the provincial governments for the restoration of the infrastructure destroyed due to rain.”
Information Minister Ataullah Tarar said that the government was carrying out relief and rescue work in the affected areas.
