Hollywood veteran Martin Short has opened up about his hopes for Only Murders in the Building and what the future holds for the hit Hulu series.
In a recent conversation with Variety, Short reflected on the show’s longevity, sharing candid thoughts about its five-season run so far.
For those unversed, the star-studded cast includes Steve Martin, Selena Gomez, Michael Cyril Creighton, Jackie Hoffman, Paul Rudd, Amy Ryan, Jayne Houdyshell, Meryl Streep, and Ryan Broussard, among others.
Speaking about the series’ success, Short admitted, “I think that the reality is, you know when it feels like it’s past its time. I think everyone’s amazed that it’s gone this long. This is a long time in streaming to go five years.”
Drawing comparisons to television classics, he noted, “Even The Dick Van Dyke Show ended after five years because one of the reasons was that they were afraid of losing the quality of it. But then Friends went how long, and they were always brilliant.”
The actor also shed light on the lively energy behind the scenes, crediting his co-stars for maintaining a lighthearted atmosphere. “It is a very loose set, and one of the reasons is because Steve [Martin] and Selena [Gomez] and I all work the exact same way—screwing around, getting the crew to laugh,” he explained.
According to Short, that playful dynamic carries over onto the screen. “On set, everyone is laughing and then… action! Oh, someone messes up, and we’re laughing again. That kind of joie de vivre is what permeates the set, and I think that translates a little bit to the camera as well.”
Currently in its fifth season, Only Murders in the Building is set to return with new episodes on September 9, 2025.
